Birth control In 1968, Pope Paul VI's encyclical Humanae Vitae landmark (Latin for "human life") to prevent the constant teaching of the Church that is always in the wrong use of contraceptives, with new people is concluded reiterated.
Contraception is "any act that either in anticipation of the conjugal act [sexual intercourse], or in his power, or in the development of its natural consequences, proposes, whether as end or as a means to make procreation impossible" (Humanae Vitae 14 ). This includes sterilization, condoms and other barrier methods, spermicides, coitus interruptus (withdrawal method), the pill, and all other methods.
The historic Christian doctrine
Few know that by 1930 all Protestant denominations agreed with the Catholic Church teaching condemning contraception as sinful. In his 1930 Lambeth Conference announced the Anglican Church, the growing social pressure fluctuated that contraception would be allowed under certain circumstances. Soon the Anglican church completely caved in, allowing contraception across the board. Since then, all other Protestant denominations have followed. Today, the Catholic Church alone proclaims the historic Christian position on contraception.
Evidence that contraception is in conflict with the laws of God, comes from a variety of sources, which are studied in this tract.
Nature
Contraception is wrong because it is built in a deliberate violation of God's plan in the human race, often called "natural law." The natural law purpose of procreation sex. The pleasure that sexual intercourse is an additional blessing from God to provide the opportunity for a new life while strengthening the bond of intimacy, respect and love between husband and wife. The loving environment this bond creates is the perfect setting for nurturing children.
But sexual pleasure within marriage is unnatural and even harmful to the spouse, when used in a way that deliberately excludes the basic purpose of sex, reproduction. God's gift of sexual intercourse, along with its pleasure and intimacy, must not be abused by deliberately frustrating its natural end-procreation.

Is contraception a modern invention? Hardly! Birth control has been around for millennia.Scrolls found in Egypt, dating back to 1900 BC, describe ancient methods of birth control that were later practiced in the Roman empire during the apostolic age. Wool, which absorbs gassed sperm, poisons, the uterus, potions, and other methods were used to prevent conception. In some centuries, even condoms were used (even from animal skin instead of latex).
The Bible mentions at least one form of contraception specifically and condemns it.Coitus interruptus, was by Onan to avoid fulfilling its duty under the old Jewish law of fathering children for a dead brother. "And Judah said unto Onan, Go in thy brother's wife and perform the duty of a brother-in-law to her, and raise offspring for your brother."But Onan knew that would be the offspring are not, as when he went to his brother's wife it the seeds spilled on the ground so he should his brother be descendants and what he did was displeasing in the eyes of the Lord, and he slew him also "(Gen. 38:8 -. 10).
The biblical penalty for not giving your brother's widow children was public humiliation, not death (Deut. 25:7-10). But Onan received death as punishment for his crimes. This means his crime was more than simply not fulfilling the duty of the brother-in-law. He lost his life because he violated natural law, like Jewish and Christian commentators have always understood. For this reason, certain forms of contraception, known historically as "masturbation", after the man who practices it, such as homosexuality as historically known as "sodomy" after the men of Sodom, who practiced that vice (cf. Gen. 19 ).
Contraception was so far outside the biblical mindset and so obviously wrong that it has not done the necessary frequent condemnations of other sins. Scripture condemns the practice when it mentions. Once a moral principle in the Bible, any application need not be determined to be mentioned. For example, the general principle that theft is wrong was clearly established in Scripture, but there is no need for an exhaustive list of every kind to make theft. Similarly, since the principle that contraception is wrong, by condemning, if it is established in the Bible, every particular form of contraception do not have the Scriptures to be addressed for us to see that it is condemned.
Apostolic tradition
The biblical teaching that birth control is wrong even clearer in the Fathers, which is found recognized the biblical and natural law principles underlying the conviction.
In AD 195, Clement of Alexandria wrote, "Because of its divine institution for the propagation of man, the semen is not ejaculated in vain, nor is it to be damaged, nor is it to be wasted" (the teacher for children 2: 10 : 91:2).
Hippolytus of Rome wrote in 255, which [had certain Christian women who have affairs with male servants] "because of their prominent origin and great property, the so-called faithful want no children of slaves or of low birth commoners, [so] the drugs of sterility or bind themselves firmly to expel a fetus which has already produced "(Refutation of All Heresies 9:12).
Some 307 Lactantius explained that some complain of "the paucity of their resources, and claim that they are not enough for the education of more children, as if in truth, their means were in [their] power ... or God is not the day the rich poor and the poor rich. Therefore, if anyone is in any case, poverty is not able to raise children, it is better to refrain from relations with his wife "(Divine Institutes 6:20).
The First Council of Nicaea, the first ecumenical council and the one that defined Christ's divinity, declared in the year 325: "If someone has castrated in good health yourself, it is for that such, if enrolled among the clergy should, from [ more] his ministry, and that henceforth no such person should be encouraged. But, as it is obvious that this is said of those who willfully do the thing and presume to castrate themselves, so if all were made eunuchs by barbarians, or be found by their masters, and should deserve nothing more than men this canon gives the clergy "(Canon 1).
Augustine wrote in 419, "I think so, although you are not lying [with your wife] in order to produce offspring, you are not in the interest of pleasure hinders procreation by an evil prayer or an evil deed. Those who blogs at do so, but they are as husband and wife are not;. not keep the reality of marriage, but with a respectable name disgraceful cover sometimes lustful cruelty or cruel lust comes to that relate to, even poisons of sterility [oral contraceptives] "(marriage and concupiscence 1:15:17).
The apostolic tradition of condemnation of contraception is so great that it was followed by Protestants until 1930 and was endorsed by all key Protestant Reformers. Martin Luther said.. "[E] very foul deed of Onan, the basest wretch he is ... a shameful sin, it is much more than horrible incest and adultery We call it unchastity, yes, a sodomitic sin goes for Onan. to her, that is, he copulates with her lies and, and if it is on the point of insemination, spills the semen, so that the woman should get pregnant certainly set in such a time the order of nature by God at conception. be pursued. Accordingly, it was .... a most shameful crime so he deserves to be killed by God. It an evil deed. Therefore, God punished him. "
John Calvin said.. "The voluntary spilling of semen outside of intercourse between man and woman is a monstrous thing awareness of sexual intercourse in order to withdraw is doubly monstrous, that the seed can fall to the ground To make this the hope of the raceis clear and kill before he is born the hoped-for offspring. "
John Wesley warned, "The sins that dishonor the body is very unpleasant to God, and the evidence of the common tendencies to be noted that what he disliked [Onan] the Lord, and it is feared, thousands, especially. individuals, through this very thing, still displease the Lord, and destroy their own souls. "(These passages are in Charles D. Provan, The Bible and Birth Control, citing the many quotations from historical figures to recognize the Protestant contraception contains evil .)
The Magisterium
The church and the fulfillment of the role it given by Christ as the identifier and interpreter of apostolic Scripture and apostolic tradition has constantly condemned contraception as seriously sinful.
In Humanae Vitae Pope Paul VI declared: "[W] e must once again declare that the direct interruption of the generative process already begun and, above all, directly willed and abortion, even if for therapeutic reasons, are excluded completely, as legal means ofregulation of birth. are also excluded, since the teaching authority of the Church has frequently declared, is direct sterilization, whether permanent or temporary, whether the man or woman. Also excluded is any action, either in anticipation of the conjugal act or achievement or in the development of its natural consequences, proposes, it would be impossible as the end or as a means of making reproduction "(HV 14).
This was reiterated in the Catechism of the Catholic Church: "[E] very action, whether in anticipation of the conjugal act, or in his power, or in the development of its natural consequences, whether making as an end or as a means impossible reproduction suggests is intrinsically evil "(CCC 2370). "Legitimate intentions on the part not justify the use of spouses morally unacceptable means ... For example, direct sterilization or contraception" (CCC 2399).
The church has also confirmed that the unlawfulness of contraception is an infallible teaching. "The Church has always taught the intrinsic evil of contraception, which means that every conjugal act is intentionally barren made this teaching as definitive, irreformable instead of contraception. Is deeply to marital chastity, however, it is contrary to the best of the transmission of life (the procreative.aspect of marriage) and the mutual commitment of the spouses (the unitive.aspect of marriage), it harms true love and denies the sovereign role of God in the transmission of human life "(Vademecum for Confessors 2:4, February 12, 1997 ).
Human Experience
Pope Paul VI predicted grave consequences resulting from the widespread and unrestrained use of contraceptives would occur. He warned: "Upright men can even better convince themselves of is the solid foundation on which base the teaching of the Church in this area when, on the consequences of methods of artificial limitation reflect the increase in child care Let them look. First of all, how wide and easy a road would thus be opened up to conjugal infidelity and the general lowering of morality. Not much experience is necessary to know the human weakness and to understand that men, especially the young who are so vulnerable on this point need encouragement to be faithful to the moral law, so that they can not escape some simple means of compliance are available. There is also fear that the man who used to be the employment of anti-conceptive growing practices can, finally, the respect for women and not lose more care for their physical and mental balance, the point may come to regard it as a mere instrument of selfish enjoyment, and not more respected and loved as his companion "(HV 17).
No one can doubt the fulfillment of these prophetic words. They have all been more than in this country as a result of the general availability of contraceptives, the "free love" movement that began in the 1960s, and the loose sexual morality, it has spawned and that continues to meet permeate Western culture.
In fact, recent studies show a much higher divorce rate for marriages in which contraception regularly than in marriages where there is not practiced. Experience the natural law, Scripture, Tradition and the Magisterium, which all bear witness to the moral evil of contraception.
Wishful thinking
Ignoring the mountain of evidence argue some, that the church to decide the use of contraceptives, for each couple, in their opinion, "individual conscience." But nothing could be further from the truth. The church always has the historic Christian doctrine that intent of contraception always hard sinful, which means that sin deadly when with full knowledge and deliberate consent (CCC 1857) done medium maintained. This doctrine can not be changed and has been taught infallibly by the Church.
There is no way on the fact that the church deny always and everywhere condemned artificial contraception. The matter was already decided infallible. The so-called "individual conscience" argument amounts to "individual disobedience."
